What Is Saudade?

Book Releases:

Rosie stepped away from her mother’s embrace. She could tell by her mother’s eyes that she had been crying.

“Maé,” Rosie asked, “why are you sad?”

Rosie’s mother wiped a tear from her cheek and smiled at her daughter.

“I was on the phone with your grandmother, Avózinha,” her mother explained. “It’s just saudade.”

“What does that mean, Maé?” Rosie asked.

“Sometimes I miss my island and that makes me feel sad,” Rosie’s mom said.

Follow Rosie on her journey to her mother’s homeland in the Azores where she learns about the history and rich culture of her Portuguese ancestry and the true meaning of “saudade.”
